Jake Hathorn is a litigation associate in Jorden Burt's Connecticut office and a member of the firm's Life Insurance Industry Group, as well as its National Trial, Insurance Regulatory & Transactions, and Class Action Practice Teams. Mr. Hathorn represents insurance companies in jurisdictions throughout the country, focusing his practice on high exposure civil litigation, including class action defense, and state insurance regulatory matters, including multi-state market conduct examinations. Mr. Hathorn has experience in complex motions practice, large-scale discovery matters, trial preparation and support, and advising clients regarding a broad range of substantive and procedural areas, including life insurance and annuity sales practices, emerging areas of state insurance regulation, and market conduct examination procedure. In addition to the important victories that he has helped achieve on behalf of the firm's largest clients, Mr. Hathorn regularly donates his time and expertise to effect positive outcomes on behalf of pro bono clients.

Representative Matters

  • Helped obtain a favorable settlement on behalf of the issuer of an excess loss insurance policy in a Connecticut state court action involving allocation of responsibility among multiple insurers and third party administrators for reimbursement of certain unpaid health benefit claims under a self-funded employee health benefit plan.
  • Following a trial on the merits, obtained a favorable judgment on behalf of pro bono client in a limited contested divorce action.
  • Litigated complex legal malpractice action in Massachusetts state court through trial preparation, obtaining a favorable settlement on behalf of a non-financial services company against its former counsel.
  • In numerous state courts on behalf of a life insurance company, obtained orders staying litigation of individual actions pending outcome of certified nationwide class action.
